Lead Level Designer

The Lead Level Designer is responsible for level design beginning from 2D concept layouts and design documents, eventually translated into 3D mock-ups and final levels. Mock-up’s focus on object placement, AI scripting/implementation, and ultimately creating engaging gameplay and deep combat scenarios. This designer will also be responsible to help submit design ideas, improvements, and in some cases could be asked to finesse the look of a level with well designed lighting, and a strong artistic attention to detail.

The ability to communicate effectively and collaborate successfully with game designers, art directors, producers, concept, and environment artists is essential. Level designers need to be able to help coordinate and maintain scheduled tasks, communicate progress, identify obstacles, and both give and receive direction. You need to be able to work un-supervised at times while remaining effective.

This position will be working on a next-gen, 1st person shooter using a world-class brand.

Qualifications:

  • Thorough knowledge of major 3D package (e.g., 3DS MAX, Maya, Softimage).
  • Thorough knowledge of at least major game editor but preferably the UnrealEd Editor (e.g., UnrealEd, QERadiant, Hammer).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to accept and follow direction, collaborate productively with others, and work to meet deadlines as necessary.
  • Positive, professional attitude. Disciplined and self-motivated with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to think creatively and analytically.
  • Excellent organizational skills. Ability to multitask effectively, prioritize competing demands, and follow through on details. Must be flexible enough to deal with changing role requirements.
  • Passionate about games and able to articulate that passion clearly and analytically. A broad knowledge base of console and PC games.
  • Secondary education degree or equivalent.
  • Significant game industry experience.

Additional Qualifications for Lead Level Design position:

  • 2+ published titles, at least one in a Senior Role.
  • Previous experience in both single and multi player level design for a high profile action title.
  • Define rules/best practice for all level design in the game.
  • Supervise the implementation of game systems.
  • Mentor/train other level designers. Team management may be required.
  • Maintain excellent communication across the entire team.

Sample Work Requested:

  • Applicants should submit level samples in a playable format (preferably an Unreal level).
  • Include a written description of each sample, identifying in detail your contribution to the level. Online or CD submissions preferred.
